It holds immense significance in India's freedom struggle and is remembered as the birthplace of the Quit India Movement. August Kranti Maidan gained prominence in 1942 during the Indian independence movement. It was at this location that Mahatma Gandhi delivered the iconic Quit India speech on August 8, 1942, urging Indians to demand complete independence from British rule.
