ASI - KUDA CAVES e-Walk Audio Guide (कुडा गुहा)
Kuda Caves is a group of ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves dating back to around the 1st century BCE, located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, close to the Arabian Sea trade routes. Carved into a laterite hill, the complex consists of more than twenty caves, including chaityas and viharas, which served as monastic residences and prayer halls for Buddhist monks. The caves are noted for their simple yet functional architecture, stone benches, cisterns for rainwater harvesting, and Brahmi inscriptions that record donations by merchants and local patrons, highlighting Kuda’s role as an important monastic center linked to early maritime trade along the Konkan coast.

How To Reach
Kuda Caves are located in Raigad district, Maharashtra, and can be reached by road from major nearby towns such as Alibaug, Pen, and Roha. The nearest railway station is Roha, situated on the Konkan Railway line, from where Kuda village is about a 25–30 km drive via local roads. From Mumbai or Pune, visitors can travel by road through NH-66 and state highways, followed by a short trek from the base village to the caves. The final approach involves walking uphill on a well-defined path, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Visitors to Kuda Caves can explore the ancient rock-cut caves and observe their architectural features, including prayer halls, monastic cells, water cisterns, and early Brahmi inscriptions. The site offers opportunities for heritage walks, photography, and quiet reflection in a serene natural setting overlooking the Konkan landscape.
